Here at Decksaver HQ, we love our music and have all dabbled a bit in the DJing world. We love our tech too and especially our mobile phones. We therefore thought it would be great to see what DJ apps were around, for those spare few minutes we might have on the train, plane, bus and wherever else! So we have rounded up some of our favourites, which start at the low price of £0! Check them out below and then head on over to your App Store or website of choice and take your pick.
MIXO is a relatively new software that allows DJs to share their sound libraries across multiple platforms and devices including Mac, Windows, Linux, mobile and the cloud so music can be streamed anywhere. Its unique, cross-platform capabilities allow for bridging libraries across Traktor, Rekordbox, Serato, Virtual DJ and others and manage your sets whilst away from your computer. It also lets you listen to your sets on your device too. There’s a free option but £5 per month gets you synching across all libraries.
Algoriddim’s Djay app has been around for a while now and most DJs have probably dabbled with the software at one time or another. It’s also won multiple Apple Design Awards for its smooth-looking interface and ease of use. It can be used across multiple platforms including iOS, Android, Mac and Windows and with its classic interface, featuring a classic mixer and turntable set-up along with track artwork, waveforms and live production tools, it’s a pretty powerful package. It’s free to start with but the Pro version will unlock more features.
With its 1980s video game look and feel, Scratchers Delight is definitely going Old Skool! This highly-rated app from Beat Jukies features beats and breaks to scratch over, with tracks supplied by artists such as Babu, J.Rocc, D-Styles, Melo-D and Rhettmatic. It’s something a bit different and incredibly addictive once you get started! Hours of fun guaranteed.
Pioneer DJ are the developers of the neat WeDJ app, which is a slick-looking, 2 channel mixing app for spinning tunes on the move, straight from your smartphone. But it’s not just an iOS app: WeDJ also allows for full control from one of the brand’s controllers such as the DDJ-200, DDJ-WeGO4 and DDJ-WeGO3. It has all the features you would expect to see on a DJ app including sampler, beat sync, loop and hot cue features and FX to help with creative mixing. Tunes can be played from external libraries such as iTunes, Beatport LINK and SoundCloud Go+ and for newbies, there’s plenty of helpful hints and tips.
This easy-to-use app claims to be the only ‘full-stack DJ software in the world’ and by this, the brand says that every component and function is designed, developed and fine-tuned in-house. It’s a pretty standard user-friendly interface with the standard club set-up in mind, so getting started shouldn’t be a problem for most, whilst for those who want to integrate with an external controller, mixer, MIDI controller, or even DVS; it can do that too. Definitely worth an audition as it’s free to download.
DJ Mixer Studio is another cool-looking tool to help create mixes whilst out and about. It’s a neat looking app and has all the features you would expect from an iOS mixing platform including loops, cue buttons and effects. It also comes with the ability to record mixes and has 30 drum pads available.
You may have come across Pacemaker DJ before if you are an Apple user. It’s won an Apple Design Award and had some great press from the likes of Verge and Wired. It’s available across all iOS devices; including the Apple Watch. So primarily the app works for iTunes and Spotify and allows the user to select their tunes, make a mix (either auto-assisted or more manually), edit (if required) and then share accordingly. Of all the apps we have looked at, this one is one of the most simple and it’s visually stunning we have seen. It doesn’t have buckets of features, but it’s been built for the devices on which it will be used. Well worth checking out.
